Everyone is asking... "How was your first Northern Ontario Winter in your Groovy Yurt?"

So what is our answer?? Amazingly hot !

This winter for us Funky Farmers was amazing ! Many factors played a role in this amazement... Firstly, not having to pay a hiked up hydro bill over those long cold wintery months felt incredible ! Living in the big country house in Sarnia, Ontario would always bring in some stress. We had to cover windows with plastic, be mindful about energy consumption all while trying to keep the house warm and had to find ways to pay that massive hydro bill.

We heat our yurt with a wood burning cooking stove, so secondly, cooking and warming us up was a pretty big adventure on its own! Keeping comfy in our yurt this winter was no problem, even on coldest days when the weather would fair minus 40 degrees celcius. Actually, we were so warm and toasty that the majority of the time we would open both main doors to allow some cool freshness come in! Our Pioneer Princess Cook Stove is very big and comes with a large fire box, an oven and water resevoire tank.

To us, what were some key essentials for winter yurting?

  • A roof shovel with a really long pole
  • A positive attitude and sense for adventure
  • Bravery for those routine treks to the outhouse
  • Our Sauna camper for winter bathing
  • Stockpiling water inside the yurt to avoid freezing
  • A second layer of felt
  • A good stove for cooking and heating
  • A good supply of dry wood
  • An indoor temperature alarm to wake us up when it got cold and the fire needed tending
  • Slippers or warm socks because the platform sometimes got cold when the snow was not piled up around the base of the yurt.
Can you spot the big shovel ?!

The snow piled up around the base of the yurt provided greater insulation and helped keep the platform warm under out feet. Notice our Sauna in the background?

What to do when the thaw happens and you miss winter? You start planning for spring !

There is an overwhelming sense of joy and pride within as we leave Winter behind and immerse ourselves into Spring and all of her glory !

As we prepare for our first spring in our yurt on this forested land, things get a little antsy in the world of bugs as they start to wake up this year. Im sure its going to get interesting around here ! The Funky Farm has some big plans for Spring 2017 !

Happy Yurting !
