What is a Groovy Yurt & What does Groovy Yurts Inc have to offer?
A yurt, or ger in Mongolia, is the traditional dwelling of Central Asian nomads. Over the past 3000 years, yurts have been sculpted and developed to suit natures environment and often extreme weather conditions. Yurts are structurally sound and can withstand large snow loads and very strong winds. Yurts are typically round with a dome in the middle which is supported by poles. Groovy yurts are made of traditional natural materials and are different from todays modern yurt. Our Yurts are breathable and natural.
Materials that make the yurt
All the materials that make up the yurt are natural.
Our yurts all include the following as a standard:
– a solid plain door combined with a double French door style frame
– a dome, the toono, covered on its front half with a very basic Plexiglas covering and a hole for chimney
– two central posts, the bagaans (or 4 for yurts above 6-walls)
– a set of huns (roof rafters)
– all of the above are hand painted with traditional motives
– a first cotton liner
– several wall sections for the circumference of your yurt
– one layer of white felt
– a one piece water resistant and decorated canvas
– a top cover for the toono (the urgh)
– a bottom protection and decorative skirt (the rayartch)
– all necessary ropes
We generally recommend you use a platform to support your yurt. Keeping your yurt off the ground can give longevity to your yurt as it protects the felt from getting wet as it rains. Platforms can be installed on sub framing, cement pad, or a gravel bed. Some of our clients have gotten really creative with the flooring of their yurt and have used straw bales or temporary panel flooring.
